**Full Time Horse Trainer**

**Salary $70,000 plus super**

**Job Purpose**:
The duties of Horse Trainer encompass those of horse trainer and form the major focus of the role. Complimentary duties are to otherwise manage the daily welfare of thoroughbred horses and their foals to assist with the process of spelling, foaling, weaning, pre training prep and preparation of horses for racing and travelling, accustoming the horse to all equipment and procedures to bring the horse to the racetrack fit for purpose.

**Principle duties: with % of time spent training (inclusive of riding) and handling**

Primary duties include but are not limited to training horses on the ground and under saddle. Other training and education includes the correction of difficult and problem behaviors in older horses.

**Training and educating horses - 50%**

1. Train horses on the ground: accustom to the equipment used for horse to be ridden, including bridles, saddlery and other gear; accustom horses to handling; accustom horses in handling for veterinary treatments, farrier and for training adjuncts such as swimming

2. Attend to all horse requirements including but no limited to feeding, cleaning, wound care, general wellbeing checks, assisting farrier, drenching and vaccination, assisting vet as required, transport of horses to and from other venue, breeding preparation and all duties associated including travelling with horses.

**Handling young horses - 50%**

1. Prepare horse for work (brush horse and place bridle, saddlery and other gear on horse) of which some aspects will be routine and some of the time will be a process of reinforcing training and education due to the unpredictable nature of horses.

2. Oversee daily care and welfare of horses including administer medication and/or veterinary treatment under the guidance/guidelines of veterinarians when required

**Principle responsibilities**:
1. Advise Farm Manager on factors affecting horses and their education

2. Train young Thoroughbred horses to become accustomed to being handled and transported.

3. Carries out a range of horse trainer tasks, including:

- Accustom thoroughbred horses to the equipment used for racing, including bridles, saddlery and other gear used in training and racing
- Train thoroughbreds, including from time to time mares, foals, spelling horses and pre-trainers to be handled for general handling and veterinary treatments, including handling them in the stable, yard and for swimming
- Re-educate horses to resolve problems such as biting and kicking,

4. Report to the Farm Manager all elements of horse welfare and accurately describe any deviation from normal performance, taking a role in the treatment and care of any injured horse, under direction and working with the veterinary team.

5. Maintain communication with other members of the team and liaise with other members of the team to ensure appropriate horses care is provided to the individual horse.

6. Monitor the health & condition of assigned horses, ensuring the welfare of each horse.

7. Observe safety requirements and set an example for safe behaviours and practices in all aspects of horse management and training. This includes reporting to the Farm Manager or his representative when breaches of safety are observed.

8. Behave in a calm and careful manner and at no time using an instrument with horse.

9. Use of personal protective equipment when carrying out tasks.

10. Ensure the safe use and maintenance of materials, tools and equipment in use.

**Knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications**:

- A Certificate III or equivalent International qualification, or in the absence of a qualification a minimum of three years professional experience educating and training horses
- A minimum of two years’ experience handling and working with and educating thoroughbred horses
- Knowledge and experience of horse training and handling methods specific to thoroughbred racing breaking, or pre-training
- Proven ability to train and educate young horses
- Oral and written communication skills of a level to take instruction; provide information and advice to others and prepare basic reports
- Ability to work in a team and independently
- Knowledge of safe operation of all equipment and use of personal protective equipment
- Sound knowledge of health and safety obligations and demonstrated skills in safe operation of equipment relevant to the training and preparation of racehorses

**Salary**: $69,999.00 - $70,000.00 per year
