**Acting Professional Board Members will be appointed for a term of up to 12 months and may be engaged by the President on a full-time, part-time depending on the Board's needs at particular time. Periods of engagement will be negotiated with appointees.
The Board is required to make evidence-based and transparent decisions in relation to parole matters in accordance with the Chapter 5 of the Corrective Services Act.
The Board has the legislative power to make decisions to
- refuse parole unless a prisoner cooperates to identify location of the victim (No Body No Parole);
- refuse parole unless exceptional circumstances exist for prisoners with links to terrorism;
- amend, suspend or cancel a parole order; and
- confirm or set aside a decision to immediately suspend a prisoner's parole order.
An acting Professional Board Member is required to:
- Exercise proper diligence, care and attention in undertaking their duties;
- Use their substantial skills and experience administrative law to ensure evidence-based and transparent parole decisions are made in accordance with administrative law principles and relevant statutory frameworks;
- Prepare plain-English correspondence to prisoners and legal representatives relating to parole decisions;
- Participate in a rotational, on-call roster to deliver a 24/7 service to immediately suspend parole orders where required.
Acting Professional Board Members are appointed by Governor-in-Council on the recommendation of the Minister for Youth Justice and Victim Support, and Minister for Corrective Services. The terms and conditions of their appointment are fixed and unable to be negotiated.
Acting Professional Board Members are appointed to undertake the duty of Professional Board Members where a vacancy or other need may arise, as determined by the President. Acting
Professional Board Members may be engaged on a full-time, part-time, or ad hoc basis.
The proposed term of appointment for Acting Professional Board Members is 12 months. Further recruitment to an ongoing Professional Board Member role is envisaged within this time.
It is highly desirable that applicants be available for rapid commencement with the Board. All necessary training and support will be required.
