Mortuary/pathology Assistant

Reporting to the Anatomical Pathology Supervisor, you will prepare bodies and equipment in order to provide assistance to pathologists during autopsies and tissue retrieval including performing specialised dissection techniques on complex cases, evisceration, reconstruction and cleaning of deceased of all ages and in various stages of infection, decomposition, mutilation and incineration while ensuring utmost respect for the deceased.

**In addition to this, you will**:

- Maintain integrity and confidentiality. Demonstrate a professional attitude, approach, commitment, and be dependable and competent in their work to ensure an efficient and high-quality service.
- Assist in the lodging of deceased, administrative tasks involved with respect to hospital and coronial cases, preparation of bodies for viewing and identification purposes and the controlled release or transfer of bodies to authorised persons.

Key competencies (role specific criteria)
You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

- Knowledge of, or the ability to gain knowledge of, techniques relating to post-mortem examinations, tissue retrieval and other related Histology laboratory tasks with proven ability to follow both written and oral instruction with the insight to solve and identify problems through technical methodology; and organise information quickly.
- Demonstrated reliability, integrity, confidentiality, and professional attitude necessary for a medico-legal and potentially hazardous workplace.
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the proven ability to work in a team and contribute positively to team outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to proactively maintain a safe, secure, and clean mortuary and laboratory environments and an understanding of and willingness to contribute to the relevant systems, processes, and procedures.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements
- While not mandatory, any relevant qualification would be well regarded.
- The position requires sound judgement, critical thinking, and the ability to actively listen.
- The physical ability, manual dexterity in the wrist and fingers, a steady arm and good near vision are beneficial when assisting in autopsies.
- Probation period of 6 months.
- Undergo psychometric evaluation.
- In some circumstances and following consultation, Queensland Health staff may be required to participate in 24-hour shift, on-call or weekend roster arrangements.
