The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

**What Will You Do?**
In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a highly skilled and high-performing Criminal Law Practice. The primary responsibility of the Paralegal is to support solicitors in delivering legal services to Aboriginal clients by performing paralegal and administrative tasks, primarily within the Canberra Criminal Law Practice. The role involves regular contact with clients, legal professionals, and justice system stakeholders and:

- Providing paralegal and administrative support including file management, drafting legal documents, data entry, and organising court-related materials.
- Liaising with clients, families, legal professionals, and service providers to coordinate appointments, send briefs, and confirm, court dates.
- Preparing legal documents such as subpoenas, affidavits, court reports, and correspondence.
- Assisting with reception duties and support solicitors with secretarial and administrative tasks as needed.
- Maintaining accurate records including court rosters and ensuring compliance with ALS policies and WHS regulations.
- Promoting and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural practices and work collaboratively with legal and administrative teams.

**Who Are We Looking For?**
A highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be able to demonstrate:

- Must Identify as Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander
- Strong commitment to social justice principles and culturally appropriate behaviours, with respect for Aboriginal cultural practices.
- Proven administrative and computer skills, including Microsoft Office proficiency and accurate typing (35+ wpm)
- Excellent communication, phone manner, and switchboard handling experience.
- Strong organisational, time management, and multitasking abilities, with a high level of confidentiality.
- Effective problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Desirable: Experience in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community organisations and/or legal practice.
