We are seeking an enthusiastic Technical Assistant in Molecular Genetics to support projects that aim to understand the genes and molecular mechanisms underlying trait variation in crop species important to the agricultural sector in the State of Victoria, Australia. The position is part of a multi-disciplinary team that generates and integrates phenotypic and genotypic data, and innovatively links genetic and genomic resources to breeding and research to enable crop improvement. The role of this Technical Assistant is to participate in research that applies next-generation genetic and genomic technologies and molecular breeding tools to crop improvement, including wheat, barley, pulses and oilseeds. Major duties and responsibilities include performing, under general supervision, techniques for trait dissection based on DNA/RNA sequencing, genotype-by-sequencing and Infinium iSelect SNP assay. The role primarily involves performing wet-chemistry, and contributing to the development and implementation of new assays. The successful applicant will be expected to maintain accurate laboratory records and conduct research that contributes to multiple projects in parallel with different science outcomes. The role requires a collaborative mindset, strong oral and written communication skills and excellent attention to detail. The Technical Assistant will work under the general supervision of Technical Officer Dr Parampreet Kaur. The successful applicant will work effectively as a member of a team, enjoy flexible working arrangements and undertake a wide variety of work across the division.
**Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications**
- Excellent knowledge and experience in laboratory methods for genetics and genomics, with emphasis on next-generation DNA/RNA sequencing, genotyping technologies and DNA purification.
- Demonstrated experience and efficiency in a high sample throughput laboratory in which a range of molecular genetics and genomics techniques were applied, including the use of liquid handling robotics.
- Strong attention to detail and record keeping skills, including experience in maintaining electronic databases.
**This is a fixed term position available for a period of 24 Months. The work location for this position is AgriBio Bundoora.**
