**The Department**

**Clinical Research Unit**

he Malignant Haematology and Stem Cell Transplantation Service supports patients with malignant haematologic disorders such as myeloma and leukaemia from a broad area of Melbourne. The Haemostasis & Thrombosis unit supports Victoria’s adult haemophiliacs and is also responsible for patients with other coagulation anomalies and thromboembolic events. The Clinical Research Unit conducts a large number of clinical trials for these diverse patient groups and runs Investigator-initiated studies as well as sponsored trials. The Unit maintains close links with the pre-clinical research laboratories and supports research with the preparation and storage of suitable specimens.

**The Role**

To perform the laboratory tasks and duties associated with the Trials Unit.

**Trial specimens for sendaways**
- Maintain trial kits, lab manuals and relevant trial paperwork for different trials
- Processing and dispatching specimens to other laboratories
- Perform dipstick urinalysis and record results
- Spreading blood films
- Completing trial-specific appropriate paperwork accurately
- Engage appropriate couriers to collect prepared specimens

**Laboratory QC & general duties**
- Maintain the refrigerators and freezers, laboratory working areas and storage spaces in a suitable manner
- General cleaning, sterilising and waste management
- Prepare buffers and reagents as needed
- Perform QC as needed eg recording freezer temperatures
- Maintenance of documentation, methods and records
- Ordering new laboratory consumables as needed
- Maintenance of tissue bank liquid nitrogen storage

**Preparation of specimens for research unit**
- Cell & serum separation and cell pellet preparation using approved methods
- Preparation of DNA, stabilisation of RNA specimens
- Cryopreservation of samples
- Accurate storage of specimens for retrieval and filing

**Maintenance of specimen databases**
- Maintain a number of specimen databases regularly & accurately
- File paperwork appropriately

**Qualification & Experience Required**

**Essential**
- Previous laboratory experience essential
- Science qualification desirable
- Computer capable - Familiar with Excel

**Desirable**
- GCP
- Science qualification
- Trials experience
- Hospital experience
