About the CAV Legal team and roles
The Consumer Affairs Legal Team (CAV Legal) provides legal services to the Director of Consumer Affairs Victoria and initiates legal enforcement responses including initiation of court and disciplinary proceedings.
The CAV Legal team provide legal services across CAV, but primarily to the Regulatory Services Division. That support is provided through the provision of specialist legal advice to investigators prior to and during the course of investigations, preparation of legal briefs and materials to assist in the successful prosecution of defendants and by appearing and conducting litigation in all jurisdictions, including the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, Magistrates' Court of Victoria, County Court of Victoria and the Supreme Court of Victoria as well as the Federal Court of Australia. The position also takes a leadership role in project teams conducting sensitive and complex investigations and other compliance and enforcement activities.
Your Role
- Reporting to and working closely with the General Manager, CAV Legal, the Managing Principal Solicitor will lead and assist with the supervision and management of a team of lawyers.
- Provide sophisticated, authoritative and concise advice on complex matters arising under the operation of Australian Consumer Law.
- Appear as a solicitor advocate and conduct complex court and tribunal proceedings.
- Provide advice and leadership across the Regulatory Services Division, working within a team-based environment conducting sensitive and complex investigations and other compliance and enforcement activities.
**What we are looking for**:
For the advertised role, you will need to be legally qualified in Australia and have previous experience in the interpretation of legislation and provision of complex legal advice. Experience in appearing in courts and tribunals and managing the conduct of legal proceedings is essential.

This includes evidence of three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine required by the department (from time to time).
