Risk Specialist, Climate Risk

The Risk Specialist is an integral member of the Climate Risk team who work collaboratively across APRA to support the supervision of climate risk in APRA’s engagement with Banking Insurance and Superannuation entities. This includes supporting the training and upskilling of supervisory team members, and supporting supervisory team members as they undertake supervision activities with a climate risk focus.
The Risk Specialist will also support the Climate Risk Team’s broader domestic and international engagement activities, providing insights and strategic input to climate-specific initiatives.
**The team**
The Climate Risk team is part of the Cross Industry Insights division (CID), which provides cross-industry data and insights, specialist advice and forward-looking analysis to strengthen supervisory judgement, policy development and strategic decision-making.
The Climate Risk team is APRA’s centre of excellence for climate risk initiatives, supervision support, leadership and engagement on climate risk issues across APRA. The team supports the supervision of climate risk, delivers influential industry initiatives, and engages with a wide range of domestic and international stakeholders on the evolution of climate risk understanding in the financial sector, and the development of related emerging risk areas such as nature risk.
**Key responsibilities**
As a member of the Climate Risk Team you will work with colleagues in enhancing APRA’s supervision of climate risk across one of the 3 APRA regulated industries: Superannuation, Insurance or Banking.
- Provide specialist technical advice on climate risk, and related risks such as nature risk
- Build capability across APRA by actively sharing knowledge, training and mentoring others. Collaborates internally and externally to achieve broader APRA or industry outcomes
- Support the broader Risk team in responding to organisational requests for support, such as contributing to speeches and briefings
- Contribute to, and where appropriate, leading engagement with domestic and international stakeholders on climate risk issues
- Contribute to the appropriate integration of policy developments (e.g. ISSB, Basel Core Principles, Sustainable Finance Strategy, Sustainable Finance Taxonomy, etc.) into APRA’s ongoing engagement on climate risk
- Actively contribute in cross-agency regulatory engagement (e.g., the Council of Financial Regulators Climate Working Group) and international processes (e.g., the Network for Greening the Financial System)
- Contribute to thinking on complex and ambiguous challenges problems impacting entity understanding of climate risk
- Deliver high quality outcomes, modelling inclusive behaviours and instilling an open culture where divergent views are shared and respected.
**About you**
- Knowledge and understanding of climate risk, climate finance, or a strong willingness to rapidly upskill in climate risk
- Prior experience in insurance underwriting, investment and asset management, banking risk, or the supervision of superannuation, insurance or banking entities (beneficial but not essential)
- The ability to exercise sound judgment and problem solve while being able to work collaboratively with stakeholders at all levels of the business, in a professional team environment
- A positive mindset, a willingness to offer new ideas and a fresh perspective, and comfort with analytical and strategic development in an absence of perfect information
- Strong personal integrity and an intuitive understanding of what is reasonable and prudent business practice
- Relationship building, negotiation and influencing capability at senior level
- Demonstrated ability to identify strategic issues and develop and implement appropriate solutions.
