The Commercial Manager builds on linkages with industry, government and other public and private sector organisations to support research, development, and commercialisation at Deakin University. The role will have a particular internal and external client focus, aligned to one or more of Deakin’s research strengths, working collaboratively to develop markets and prepare business plans.

In addition to being responsible for engagement with a portfolio of industry sectors, you will support and deliver on new strategies and initiatives for growing research, raising research income, and manage commercially focused activities, including negotiating research contracts, licences, and agreements, as well as developing business cases.

Within the REACH business unit the role will be responsible for working with partners to effectively manage change over the program life including renegotiation of contract commercials, identifying and realising synergies between projects and creating future pipeline partners and opportunities.

**Your key responsibilities will include**:

- Establishing long-term partnerships with Deakin’s research community, acting as a trusted advisor, changing direction in alignment with learnings and offering expert solutions and strategies aligned with Deakin’s strategic priorities
- Leading or contributing to multi-disciplinary teams of researchers, enabling functions and external partners, to coordinate the development and implementation of initiatives for growing research and industry-based projects, attracting funds for research, fostering collaboration with industry and government, and supporting the commercialisation of research outcomes
- Working collaboratively with faculties, institutes and portfolios, and external partners to position Deakin as a preferred research partner in targeted markets
- Contributing expertise to solutions that are leading practice and sustainable to support intellectual property protection strategies
- Delivering capacity building of Deakin researchers and research teams to effectively engage with industry and government and plan for the commercialisation of their research outcomes
- Identifying and addressing barriers to effective teamwork and interaction on IP protection and commercialisation, and taking action to eliminate competition and ‘silos’ between individuals, teams, faculties and divisions
- Taking personal responsibility for meeting objectives and progressing work. Show initiative and proactively step in and do what is required. Commit energy and drive to see that goals are achieved

**To be successful, you’ll have**:

- A postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline or an equivalent combination of qualifications and experience
- Demonstrated capacity to build relationships and represent with internal and external partners and customers across industry, government and university sectors
- Understanding of university research culture and the pathways for commercialisation of research
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to achieve quality customer service for clients
- Understanding of research and technology concepts and ability to achieve commercial outcomes
- Ability to negotiate and manage contractual arrangements and coordinate projects
