**Alfred Health**
Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory to inpatient and home and community-based services. On 1 January 2026, Alfred Health will come together with Kooweerup Regional Health Service, Peninsula Health, Bass Coast Health and Gippsland Southern Health Service to create Bayside Health, a newly merged health service with more than 22,000 employees caring for a community of over 1.2 million Victorians. The new health service will provide people with the best possible care with services that support them throughout their lives. The merger will also strengthen our workforce, providing new training, education and career opportunities. Subject to final approval on 1 January 2026, all employees from the five health services will transfer to Bayside Health.
We invite applicants for the 12month position of Burns Fellow commencing August 2027
This position is based at The Alfred (Adult burns) in Melbourne. The Australian mainland state of Victoria has a population of more than 6.6 million people. This service is the state-wide provider of burns care for all adults with complex major burn injuries in Victoria, as well as many people with less severe burns. In addition, we provide education and training for rural and regional clinicians involved in caring for burn-injured patients, and collaborate with community and industry groups on burn awareness campaigns and to provide first aid education and training.
In addition to clinical care provision and provision of clinical leadership in all aspects of burn care, we undertake research into the causes and mechanisms of burn injuries, clinical outcomes and emerging clinical treatment technologies. The Victorian Adult Burns Service at The Alfred provide:
- Acute care for all severely injured burns patients in Victoria;
- Secondary reconstructive surgery for burns patients in association with the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit;
- Post-Operative rehabilitation and scar management services;
- Advice, assessment and treatment of outpatients with minor burns.
The aim of the Fellowship is to foster the development of clinical skills in both the medical and surgical management of adults with burn injuries, during the acute, rehabilitation and secondary reconstructive phases of the episode: together with acquisition of management and research skills to enable the fellow to take up a position as a consultant in burn surgery on completion of the Fellowship.
The fellow will conduct rostered theatre lists, undertake care of inpatients, both elective and non-elective, and assess referrals from the Emergency department and other hospital Departments both in hours and after hours.
The fellow is also expected to complete a research project during the fellowship. This research project can be clinical, basic science or translational research.
Applications are open to Plastic or General Surgeons who have recently completed their training or who expect to complete training in 2026 and who seek to pursue further subspecialty training in Burns.
**Applications close: Sunday, 30th November 2025**
In accordance with the Health Services Amendment (Mandatory Vaccination of Healthcare Workers) Act 2020, health care workers in Category A or B roles (as determined by the department’s risk ratings) are required to be vaccinated against influenza or hold an acceptable medical exemption.
