The Queensland Herbarium and Biodiversity Science is a centre for research and information on Queensland plants, animals and plant communities and is home to Queensland Species and Herbarium Collection Team. This position is based at the Queensland Herbarium, Toowong.
As the Science Leader your key duties and responsibilities are to:

- Provide high level strategic and operational leadership of the Species and Herbarium Collections Unit, which incorporates research and operational programs supporting the Queensland Government's conservation and environmental agenda. Develop and maintain high level professional, scientific and technical expertise and skills to anticipate and respond to current and emerging issues. Ensure the successful development, delivery and implementation of new and enhanced plant systematics and herbarium collection science, products and services in a timely manner, including the management of complex projects with diverse stakeholder groups, conflicting priorities and sensitive political impacts. Champion organisational purpose, values and strategic priorities, and provide timely and high quality technical and scientific advice to the Director, Executive Director and the Deputy Director-General and other senior managers to address policy, legislative and other issues. Supervise staff, foster good working relationships and commitment for team culture within the unit and broader Science Division, recognise the unique talents and aspirations of the workforce and enhance capability through targeted development activities.

**You will possess**:

- High-level level leadership skills including the ability to effectively manage work teams and individual staff and to develop, coordinate and deliver a multidisciplinary projects portfolio. Knowledge and experience in plant or macrofungal systematics and herbarium collection science relevant to the needs of government, industry and the community today and into the future. Ability to successfully lead, initiate, implement and contribute to change and continuous improvement initiatives within the Species and Herbarium Collections Team, the Queensland Herbarium and Biodiversity Science Unit, Science Division. High level communication and negotiation skills.

To be eligible for appointment to this position in the professional officer stream, you must have a university degree (undergraduate and/or postgraduate) from a recognised tertiary institution in Science, majoring in botany or ecology or agreed equivalent.
It is a mandatory requirement for the occupant of this position to hold an unrestricted manual driver's licence or be prepared to obtain a manual licence if they do not. Officers are required to drive government vehicles, including four-wheel drives as part of their day-to-day and field work.
To be appointed to this position, you must be an Australian citizen, have a permanent residency status or a visa permitting you to work in Australia. You are required to notify the department if your right to work in Australia ceases.
