The Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) provides diagnostic and research capabilities required to investigate and respond to newly emerging diseases affecting livestock and other animals. Our Quality Assurance team is now offering an opportunity for a second Animal Welfare Officer at the ACDP.
CSIRO is seeking a self-motivated ACDP Animal Welfare Compliance Manager, responsible for providing leadership in maintaining compliance with the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (2013) (the Code), and the high standards of animal care and use across ACDP in strong well-knit onsite internal collaboration within ACDP’s Animal Research Ethics Team, Animal Ethics Co-ordinator and the Animal Ethics Committee
What is so interesting about this opportunity? You will be instrumental in providing expert animal welfare, compliance and veterinary advice to ensure ACDP continually improves its animal services governance framework and associated processes, to meet industry best practices and the requirements of the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (2013). You will be a trusted advisor to ensure the Facility’s continued ability to work with animals in research studies.
The appointee must be able to meet ACDP microbiological security and security assessment requirements.
**Your duties will include**:
- Monitoring approved research projects to ensure the care and welfare of the animals are met as per relevant legislation.
- Liaising with Project Leaders and Facility Managers to provide animal welfare and veterinary advice that arises during the conduct of research or animal management.
- Investigating adverse events, providing advice, suggesting any interventions to support animal welfare, and reporting the outcomes/ recommended actions to the AEC, CSIRO and the required legislative bodies.
- Providing best practice advice, looking at continual improvement for the development of new SOPs, frameworks and policies related to the care, monitoring and use of animals in research and ensuring adequate training is provided to researchers.
- Developing, coordinating, and conducting regular internal audits of ACDP animal facilities, to ensure compliance with SOPs.

**Salary**:AU$121k - AU$142k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

**To be considered you will need**:
- A veterinary degree registrable with the Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board of Victoria.
- Demonstrated experience within a scientific or health institution, with a requirement for experience in system development, implementation, and compliance framework management.
- Demonstrated understanding of quality, compliance, regulatory and environmental processes.
- Demonstrated experience working with animal ethics committees and dealing with animal welfare issues.
- A sound understanding of scientific research methods and the use of these methods in a variety of settings.
