You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

- Experience in or the ability to rapidly learn haematology pre-analytical processes, e.g. preparation of blood films, ESR analysis, preparation of films and staining of malaria and Kleihauer samples, loading samples onto analysers, aliquoting, storage, retrieval of specimens
- Experience in or ability to rapidly learn dispensing and issuing of blood and blood products.
- Knowledge and skills or the ability to acquire knowledge and skills in basic laboratory processes, together with the ability to effectively use or learn to use the Laboratory Information System.
- Proven ability to solve problems and show initiative in the workplace.
- Proven ability to manage time effectively in a highly process driven environment with competing priorities.
- Proven ability to follow instructions and work in a conscientious and accurate manner with a minimum of supervision
- Ability to communicate effectively with peers and Scientific / Technical staff orally and in writing, including the ability to follow detailed operational instructions.
- Well developed interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail, ability to focus in a busy, complex environment.
- Highly developed customer focus with experience dealing with a variety of people and a high level of awareness of impact of the individual on the overall customer experience.
- Understanding of laboratory quality systems and the requirements of NATA accreditation and ISO certification.
- Awareness of the human resource management policies applicable to contemporary workplaces.
Qualifications, registrations, and other requirements
- Nil mandatory qualifications are required for this role although a Certificate III Pathology (or similar) or ability to gain this qualification is desirable. Note: This is an entry level position.
- The Haematology & Transfusion Laboratory delivers a 24-hour, 7-day service. In this workplace, all newly appointed Laboratory staff may be required to work any rostered shift within the 24-hour 7-day roster period, including overtime as required. This facilitates the progressive review of staffing and shift arrangements in the Laboratory to accommodate changes in workload and service requirements.
- You will be expected to participate in the Haematology & Transfusion roster and will work a combination of weekday and weekend shifts within each fortnight. There may be an expectation in future for the incumbent to work afternoon shifts or continuous shifts including a combination of day, evening and overnight shifts within each fortnight.
