The County Court of Victoria is established pursuant to the County Court Act 1958. It has original and appellate jurisdiction and is the principal trial Court in the State of Victoria. The Court hears over 11,000 criminal, common law and commercial cases each year. The County Court has unlimited monetary jurisdiction in common law and commercial matters. In its criminal jurisdiction, the Court hears all indictable offences except treason, murder and related offences.
There are a total of 80 Judges of the Court and over 200 staff, including judicial support staff. The County Court regularly conducts circuit sittings at 12 circuit Courts situated in major centres throughout regional Victoria.
The County Court is committed to continuous improvement in accordance with the International Framework for Court Excellence.
The Court's vision is to be a leader in Court excellence, delivering the highest standard of justice to the community and inspiring public confidence in the rule of law.
The County Court Criminal Division hears indictable offences under Victorian and Commonwealth law, as well as appeals from the Magistrates' Court and Children's Court both in Melbourne and across regional Victoria.
The Division is governed by the Criminal Division Group comprising the Head of the Criminal Division; the Listings Judge; the Judge in charge of Non-Trial work; and the Circuit Judge.
The Criminal Division Administration Team is comprised of four functional areas, Criminal Registry Services; Case Management; Court Resources and Allocations; and Practice and Procedure. Led by the Director, together they are responsible for all administrative activities that sustain the operations of the Division, delivering critical services to Court users and the judiciary.
The Case Management Group is comprised of Division Lawyers, Case Administrators and Associates working with and supporting judicial officers in the state-wide management of cases and liaising directly with practitioners in order to identify and resolve issues as early as possible in the case management lifecycle.
The delegation of less complex functions by judicial officers to this Administrative Group enables judicial officers to focus on the hearing and determination of cases.
