**About the team**:
The **National Measurement Institute** (NMI) is Australian Government’s peak authority on measurement. We play an important role in the Australian economy by leading, maintaining and regulating Australia’s measurement system. We deliver world-class measurement products, advice and client services and administer the regulatory framework for measurement.

The **Legal Metrology Branch** primary role is to administer Australia’s measurement legislation, ensuring a level playing field, for consumers, businesses and international trade.

The **Policy and Regulatory Services Section **provides timely, accurate and appropriate support for the Secretary and Chief Metrologist, including advice and services relating to measurement policy, regulatory and technical matters. This enables the delivery of a strong and effective national measurement system that is trusted and accepted domestically and internationally and does not impose unnecessary barriers to trade through restrictive requirements.

The **Measurement Standards Unit** is accountable for the delivery of a diverse range of measurement standards calibration services to support the trade measurement activities, Legal Metrology Authorities, Government Enforcement agencies and Industry quality management systems.

The primary function of the Measurement Standards Unit (MSU) within the Legal Metrology Branch (LMB) is to provide calibration services for a diverse range of measurement standards to effectively support the measurement requirements of government and industry.
- Act and think strategically, including planning, implementing policies, business plans and strategies in line with corporate goals.
- Supervise, lead, coach and mentor a diverse team of staff and foster their development.
- Maintain strong, productive and collaborative working relationships within teams, within the department and with external stakeholder groups.

You will also have:

- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to liaise and negotiate with a broad cross section of internal and external stakeholders, including the ability to lead and participate in a team and to operate independently.
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the provisions of the _National Measurement Act 1960_, associated Regulations, National and International Test Methods for Measurement Standards applied in a 17025 accredited laboratory environment.
- Well-developed skills in research, analysis, problem solving, planning and organising to manage competing priorities and workloads.
- Personal drive and integrity in the context of the APS values, NMI values (Inclusive, Innovative, Accountable, Adaptable, Influential and Strategic) and code of conduct. Demonstrated ability to provide strong leadership in supporting others to do the same.

**What you will do**:
Effectively working in an environment with a high level of complexity, sensitivity and operating under broad direction, the successful applicant will:

- Manage and provide strategic direction to MSU team members, utilising their diverse skill sets to support to ensure the delivery of a uniform and quality measurement standards calibration service to internal and external clients.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships and key strategic partnerships with internal and external stakeholders and other service providers, with particular emphasis on the engagement with Policy and Regulatory Services Unit Managers, Trade Measurement Regional Managers, Physical Metrology Project leaders, NMI Quality Section, National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) and industry clients.
- Support LMB’s monitoring and compliance activities by providing expert advice relating to the verification and certification activities of appointed third parties.
- Provide expert advice on a range of measurement standard calibrations offered by the MSU laboratories to industry and other government agencies.
- Identify and support the implementation of improvement initiatives related to the performance of the calibration services offered by MSU laboratories.
- Maintain and implement continuous improvements to the MSU Operations Manual.
