About the Collection Development and Management program
The Collection Development and Management (CDM) Program is one of three programs
in the Collections Services Group, the others being the Collection Care and Digitisation
Program, and the Collections Transformation and Strategic Priorities Program. The
Collections Services Group is responsible for the development, management and
preservation of the AIATSIS Collection.
The CDM Program consists of the Collection Development Unit, the Archival Collections
Unit, and the Descriptive Metadata and Cataloguing Unit. The Archival Collections Unit is
responsible for accessioning, describing, and managing the Audiovisual, Manuscript and
Photographic collections.
About the Role***
There is currently one ongoing Team Leader positions available in the Archival
Collections Unit (Photographic collection). A merit pool will be created as a result of this
recruitment exercise to fill similar positions, at level.
The Team Leader plays a key role in the development, management, and documentation
of AIATSIS collection materials. This work involves but is not limited to, assessment,
accessioning, cataloguing, and describing AIATSIS collection materials; development and
review of collection management standards and procedures for collection materials and
the wider AIATSIS collection; quality assurance; collections research; and communicating
and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders. Descriptive work may involve
creating finding aids, auditioning, and captioning depending on the format of material.
This work also involves the care and management of items with cultural sensitivities.
The Team Leader also supports the Assistant Director and contributes to development
and implementation of wider program and agency business plan, policies and
procedures.
This position reports to the Assistant Director, Archival Collections Unit.
The key responsibilities of the role include:
- Collaborate with the Assistant Director in managing the workflow including
prioritising, allocating and undertaking the collection description and
management activities, as well as monitoring and reporting on the unit’s key
performance indicators.
- Undertake reviews or development of policy, standard and procedure
documents.
- Conduct research on collection materials and report its outcomes, including
consulting and communicating with internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide training and supervision and act on own and others’ development
needs.
- As a member of the Collection Development and Management program,
contribute to the achievement of AIATSIS goals and objectives, including
providing advice and representing the unit at internal and external meetings and
forums.
This position will be filled using the Affirmative Measure provision, which allows for the
targeted recruitment of Indigenous Australians into the Australian Public Service. The
vacancy is only open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. The filling of this
employment opportunity is intended to constitute an Affirmative Measure under section
8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975.
- demonstrated understanding of the role of a major specialist collection in
meeting the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and
researchers. This includes the capacity to learn about Indigenous Cultural and
Intellectual Property Rights, Indigenous cultural protocols and related cultural
safety issues.
- demonstrated experience in collection management and documentation,
including collection care, processing and describing archival materials to
professional standards and working with collection management systems and
processes
- excellent interpersonal skills, including strong oral and written communication
skills with internal and external stakeholders on complex matters
- the ability to train, motivate and supervise staff
- strong time management and organisational skills, with a demonstrated ability
- to manage changing priorities and deliver outputs- the ability to contribute to business planning, as well as policy and procedure
development.
Tertiary qualifications in Indigenous studies, information management, archives
administration, cultural heritage, or a related field are highly desirable. Equivalent
relevant skills and experience will be recognised.
