An experienced Principal Legal Officer required to manage a high-profile litigation caseload

**Your new company**

This department is responsible for strategic coordination and policy development for immigration, citizenship, counterterrorism and border security. In the Legal Group, this branch is responsible for all legal policy, legislation and litigation caseloads with relation to migration, refugees and citizenship.

**Your new role**

This branch is seeking an experienced Principal Legal Officer to take charge of a team responsible for ten staff members who are responsible for litigation matters. Your new role will see you do the following:

- Driving and leading the team of experts on all litigation, legal advice or legislative reform matters with relation to migration and citizenship issues.
- Managing the team's budget, corporate compliance and ensuring their team fulfils their administrative obligations to the APS.
- Provide instructions on behalf of Portfolio Ministers and work in collaboration with external legal services providers and on the instructions of or in consultation with internal stakeholders.

**What you'll need to succeed**

In order to be successful in this rare opportunity as the Principal Legal Officer, you will have to experience at an equivalent level within the public service, as well as the following:

- Extensive experience working in a litigation position and having worked with the AAT.
- Experience managing multiple legal professionals and demonstrating the ability to grow and lead a high-performing team.
- Be able to work under pressure and be agile, flexible and responsive to managing competing priorities and tight timeframes
- Ability to actively manage, navigate and resolve complex legal issues and strong legal advice writing and research skills
- You must hold a baseline clearance
- A degree in law from an Australian university, or a comparable overseas degree which is recognised in Australia for admission to practice
- Practising Certificate or eligibility to attain one.
