**About the team**:
The National Measurement Institute's (NMI) Power Systems Technology Team develops innovative technologies for power system measurements and testing. It operates Australia’s largest high-voltage/high-current laboratory and provides critical services to electric power utilities and to power equipment manufacturers.

We play an exciting role in supporting Australia’s Net Zero Plan as its services are essential for the generation, storage, delivery and use of clean energy.

The services are divided into three major areas:

- high-voltage testing and calibration
- calibration of power system voltage and current sensors
- manufacture of customised digital and analogue measurement devices of the highest accuracy.

The team presently offers over 30 different types of regular testing and calibration, covering a wide range of devices and measurement parameters. We also collaborate with universities, other national metrology institutes and industry in research projects to develop novel measurement techniques and systems.

Furthermore, we participate in the work of the International Electrotechnical Commission and of Standards Australia, contributing to the development of international and Australian documentary standards in the area of power systems-related fields and taking leadership roles in a range of technical working groups.
- Demonstrated excellent leadership and management skills in a technical or scientific environment.
- Extensive experience in the operation of a high-voltage laboratory and in high-voltage test and calibrations.
- A leading national authority in high-voltage test and calibration.
- Demonstrated skills and experience in developing innovative and complex measurement systems for high voltage and high current, including hardware and software.
- Demonstrated skills and experience in developing and maintaining quality systems for high-voltage test and calibration services, including developing quality system documents.
- Demonstrated skills and experience in relevant stakeholder engagement, such as client engagement for establishing complex services, working with standards development organisations such as Standards Australian and International Electrotechnical Commission and publication of research findings in scientific conferences and journals.

Strongly desired but not essential:

- A PhD in a relevant discipline is strongly preferred.

**What you will do**:
In this role, you will:

- Maintain the integrity of Australia's national standards and technical capabilities in high-voltage and high-current measurement.
- Manage test and calibration services the team provides, including managing staff and other resources, maintaining the quality system, organising and managing quality assurance activities, ensuring staff training and meeting operational targets.
- Manage workplace safety and wellbeing of team members.
- Set strategic service directions in line with agency-wide strategic objectives, lead research and development programs addressing precision measurement challenges critical to the Australian electricity transmission and distribution industry and nurture collaborations to foster innovation.
- Take a leading role in engaging stakeholders, including industry clients, technical and standards development organisations, such as Standards Australia, International Electrotechnical Commission, academia and government.

**Eligibility**:
A tertiary degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or equivalent

**Notes**:
Whilst the department does support flexible working arrangements, due to the nature of the work - this role is laboratory-based at NMI's Sydney Headquarters.
