Our services create intentional avenues for young people to explore opportunities, build support networks, and access, participate and contribute to their communities. Youth services provide a diverse range of programs which include housing and homelessness, driver training, education, employment, and training, AOD support, social and community activities, specialist therapeutic responses and youth justice programs.
About the role
We are seeking a values-driven Youth Worker who will provide a safe and secure accommodation and professional support for young people who are homeless by establishing rapport with young people and providing individual, flexible support through a person centred framework. This position is responsible for providing life skills training programs and working with the team to ensure the achievement of case plans and enable young people to achieve independence as far as possible in areas of their life. Working within a multi-disciplinary team you will support a high quality service delivery culture which is in line with policies and procedures and the values and mission of The Salvation Army.
You will successfully
- Assist in the daily operations of a 24-hour Youth Service environment within the Youth Emergency Accommodation Network that promotes the physical, emotional, spiritual and social development of young people.
- Through appropriate activities and strategies build rapport and engage with young people in order to identify and respond to their immediate needs. Offer appropriate support within a person centered, framework and provide opportunities for young people to achieve their goals.
- Activities include relationship development, referral and assessment, development of community support and service plans, all in consultation with management and other staff
- Conduct living skills/training programs and assist in ensuring relevance to the needs of the young people is maintained. Ensure access for young people to relevant services and support options both within TSA Network and external agencies, and advocate as appropriate
- Acquire and maintain a good working knowledge of accommodation and support options for homeless people both within TSA Network and external agencies and work collaboratively and professionally with other agencies.
- Participates in team activities, attends staff meetings when scheduled and demonstrates a supportive approach to other staff members which contributes to the overall team effectiveness.
- To meet Work Health and Safety obligations in line with TSA policy, procedures and relevant legislation
This is a fixed term (1 year term), full-time position located in Chisholm, ACT. Salary and accordance with the LASA EA Lvl 4.
You will have
- An understanding, empathy, appreciation and the ability to promote the values and ethos of The Salvation Army.
- Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV level) in Youth Work, Social Work or related field
- Computer skills - Microsoft Office and ability to quickly learn database programs
- Experience in youth work or within a Specialist Homelessness Service
- Demonstrated experience in engaging young people of varying cultural, racial, socio-economic and educational backgrounds
- A National Police Record Check
- ACT Working with Vulnerable People Certification
- Current ACT Driver License
- Current Senior First Aid Certification
