**The Opportunity**:
The Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP formally known as AAHL) seeks to appoint an experienced animal facility leader to provide leadership in the provision of large animal services to CSIRO science and research teams.

We seek to appoint an experienced animal studies person to the Team Leader role with either veterinary qualifications or relevant qualifications plus experience in working with animals in a research animal facility with a strong preference for experience in working in a biocontainment facility. The position will provide a high level of professional veterinary/animal expertise in support of research projects using animals within AAHL’s microbiologically secure area. In the challenging environment of the containment facility, you will supervise teams of animal technicians in the provision of animal husbandry and care and ensure that animal usage adheres to the principles of replacement, reduction and refinement.

**Your duties will include**:

- Overseeing and providing leadership over all aspects of the Werribee Animal Health Facility and along with animal technical staff, providing technical assistance to science and research activities.
- Overseeing the daily operations of the LAF and ensuring tasks are carried out appropriately and efficiently and quickly implementing solutions when problems arise.
- Inducting and training staff, contractors, and students to ensure they are appropriately skilled to undertake a range of duties in the LAF
- Conducting animal husbandry procedures and collection of biological samples such as blood and tissues from animals carrying infectious diseases, including working at high containment PC3 and PC4.
- Liaising with scientific staff and ensuring the LAF supports scientific projects and is involved through project inception, project management, and delivery including budgeting, logistic,s and assistance with Animal Ethics processes.
- Maintaining the highest possible levels of animal welfare through innovation, astute observation, promotion of animal welfare principles, and compliance with Animal Ethics Committee protocols and policies.
- Conduct regular equipment checks and maintain cleaning schedule; ensure excellent relationships are maintained with our engineering staff to ensure prompt resolution of equipment and facility issues

**Salary**:AU$117,917 - AU$138,176 per annum (pro-rata for part-time) plus, up to 15.4% superannuation

**To be considered you will need**:
Essential:

- Diploma or Relevant Degree &/or equivalent experience in animal sciences or a related field including 2 years of demonstrated achievement in leading animal studies teams,
- Demonstrated high level of scientific knowledge, competence and record of achievement in animal sciences and care in a research setting.
- Demonstrated post-qualification and career-based experience in working with a broad range of species including injections and collection, euthanasia and identification in animals such as rodents and chickens.
- A thorough understanding of relevant legislation and regulations including:

- Victorian legislation: Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 Vic and Regulations 1997
- Regulatory bodies protocol and procedures: Office of the Genetic Technology Regulator (OGTR) and Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (DAWR)
- Industry standards: Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes
- Sound administrative skills including computer skills, laboratory record keeping practices and attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively as a contributor to larger project teams and to network with scientific and industry colleagues.

Desirable:

- Experience with the development and/or operation of a quality assurance system including GLP.
- Post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline such as internal medicine, pathology, or virology.
- Experience in working at high levels of bio-containment (PC3 or 4) with a range of animals including ferrets.
- Knowledge of the animal diseases foreign to Australia, and, in particular, those exotic diseases likely to have a severe impact on trade in Australia’s livestock and livestock products, and the techniques used to diagnose these diseases.
