**About the role**:
We have an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic team leading our approach to the provision of quality care to clients of the Service. The Centre for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine (CNRM) program is directed to achieve scientific discovery for the prevention and cure of neurodegenerative brain disorders globally. The CNRM effort spans basic laboratory research through to translational and clinical research. With a multi-dimensional approach, and highly ambitious goals across multiple projects, the CNRM requires a motivated research assistant to work in a multi-disciplinary team that seeks to understand the mechanisms underlying Alzheimer’s disease.

The position will be working under the supervision of Professor Vissel and senior CNRM team members on projects investigating the role of synapses and inflammation in Alzheimer’s disease and will primarily be focused on performing tasks associated with animal handling, behavioural testing, tissue collection, immunohistochemistry and microscopy, standard molecular biology assays, and culture of cell lines and primary cells. The successful applicant will therefore have demonstrated research experience achieved through attainment of Bachelor of Science or Medical Science with First Class Honours, or evidence of previous employment as a research assistant in a biological field. The applicant will have previous experience in the handling of rodents for experimental purposes and ideally have experience in standard cell culture, biological, and anatomical techniques. In addition to performing experiments, the applicant will be required to maintain accurate records, produce reports, maintain laboratory stocks and cleanliness, or assist other senior CNRM members where required.

The position is available for 12 months with the potential for renewal pending performance and funding. Salary will be in accordance with qualifications and experience.

1. Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent’s Health Australia
2. Bachelor of Science or Medical Science with First Class Honours. Major in Neuroscience field strongly preferred but not required
3. Previous rodent handling experience required and additional experience in cell culture techniques preferred.
4. Demonstrated ability to deliver high quality work in challenging environments
5. High level interpersonal and time management skills, high level of attention to detail and exemplary oral and written communication skills
6. Demonstrated capacity to work independently and as part of a team
7. Biology techniques and anatomy techniques including but not limited to cryosectioning, immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence, microscopy, stereology, western blotting, ELISAs preferred but not required
8. Ability to follow directions but perform critical thinking and high level analytical and problem-solving skills where required
