**The Role**

The General Manager, Banking leads a national team in conducting the prudential supervision of a portfolio of domestic and multinational banks.

The Banking Division is responsible for the supervision of all authorised deposit-taking institutions including banks, building societies and credit unions performing banking related functions in Australia, focusing on financial and non-financial risk analysis.

Working with key stakeholders, the purpose of the Banking Division is to ensure Australians’ financial interests are protected and the financial system is stable, competitive, and efficient.

The role is a member of the APRA Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and the Banking Executive Leadership team reporting to the Executive Director Banking.

**Key accountabilities and outcomes**
- **People.** **Lead a team of professionals to deliver high quality outcomes, fostering an inclusive environment that creates a sense of belonging and trust and allows people to actively contribute and reach their full potential.
- **Strategic management.** Develop and implement business plans for the Division to ensure they support APRA’s strategic, business and operational objectives and priorities.
- **Relationship management.** Effectively represent APRA and proactively develop constructive relationships with a wide range of external stakeholders, including Government, industry stakeholders and international regulators
- **Quality supervision outcomes.** Continually monitor the supervisory activities of the Branch/business unit to ensure that the Branch/business unit is focused on complying with APRA’s supervision framework, approach and systems. Ensure the Executive Director and Members are updated promptly on any relevant developments that may impact in individual institutions or the industry.
- **Stakeholder management.** Build trusted and constructive relationships with key stakeholders across APRA to understand requirements, identify issues early and deliver high value outcomes.
- **Business/operational management. **Champion the APRA mission and values and translate that into the team’s operational approach that is risk based and outcomes focused. Oversee APRA’s workforce capacity and capability. Drive operational effectiveness and simplification in the delivery of the organisation’s ongoing business and change initiatives.
- **External. **Develop close networks, both locally and internationally and represent APRA at local and international forums.

**About you**
- Proven leadership and management capabilities, including the ability to organise/motivate others to achieve outcomes.
- Fosters an inclusive environment that creates a sense of belonging and trust, enables people to actively contribute, and to reach their full potential.
- Adept at leading in the face of uncertainty and facilitates understanding of complex circumstances to gain support and agreement.
- Relationship building, negotiation and influencing capability at a senior level.
- Demonstrated ability to identify strategic issues and develop and implement appropriate solutions.
- Strong personal integrity and an intuitive understanding of what is reasonable and prudent business practice.
- Sound understanding of the principles of prudential regulation and financial sector risks would be beneficial, but not essential.
- Professional qualifications in relevant field or equivalent experience.
