Financial Lines Underwriting Specialist

AXA XL is seeking a skilled Underwriter to enhance our International Financial Lines division, concentrating on our suite of Management Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance offerings.

Your role will involve delivering a profitable underwriting service to clients. Key responsibilities encompass: evaluating business in line with the established business strategy and personal authority; assisting in business reporting, planning, and forecasting; overseeing premium income and insured risks; maintaining awareness of all reported claims while contributing to their resolution; and fostering strong relationships with brokers and clients while aiding in the design and structuring of risks.

Key Responsibilities

What essential tasks will you undertake?

  • Assessing intricate submissions, including applications, policy documents, loss histories, and financial statements, while conducting thorough research to evaluate the risk level for each account and adherence to AXA XL's underwriting criteria.
  • Determining suitable risk premiums and establishing appropriate policy terms and conditions in accordance with designated underwriting tools, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Actively advising, assisting, and following up with brokers and/or clients on insurance and risk management issues to ensure their needs are met.
  • Managing relationships effectively to create opportunities for cross-selling products and ensuring client retention.
  • Monitoring underwriting and financial performance metrics for your portfolio to contribute to the profitability of the business unit.
  • Supporting the business reporting, planning, and forecasting activities.
  • Staying informed about all reported claims while providing input on their resolution as necessary.
  • Collaborating within a team environment, assisting underwriters, underwriting assistants, claims personnel, and management.

You will report to the designated Underwriting Manager.

Required Skills and Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's Degree is preferred along with demonstrated underwriting experience in relevant business sectors.
  • Ability to perform tasks in accordance with established protocols while exercising discretion.
  • Competence in identifying and resolving day-to-day challenges in straightforward scenarios.
  • Marketing acumen - Effectively strategize for sales and business development, utilizing various techniques and tools to support profitable growth over a defined timeframe.
  • Negotiation/Sales skills - Plan, structure, and conduct negotiations with brokers and/or clients to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
  • Analytical Skills – Ability to visualize, gather information, articulate, analyze, and resolve complex issues to make informed business decisions.
  • Interpersonal Skills – Build strong relationships with brokers, clients, and colleagues to enhance personal reputation within AXA XL and the broader market.
  • Strategic Planning - Make underwriting decisions that align with the business's strategic objectives and deliver results, possessing knowledge of financial targets and levers to achieve departmental goals.
  • Industry Knowledge - Understanding of the insurance sector and specific product lines to positively influence the underwriting process by enhancing personal technical and functional expertise.
