About the Role

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) is a key leadership position responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, and management of technology infrastructure, systems, and applications for the Department of Education in NSW. The CIO will set the strategic direction for the IT Directorate, ensuring the reliability, security, and scalability of technology services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the IT Directorate to deliver technology services to a geographically dispersed organisation, balancing core service delivery and maintenance with customer-centric transformation and change.
  • Develop and implement a technology strategy that aligns with the Department's goals and objectives, optimising technology investments through disciplined budget and program management.
  • Build strong relationships with internal peer groups and customers within the Department, driving the day-to-day service delivery and change agenda for the technology function.
  • Proactively engage and provide advice to key stakeholders, demonstrating a transparent, collaborative partnership-based approach.
  • Lead the IT Directorate to deliver a clear roadmap to safely transition to a future state, addressing significant technology debt and ensuring the Department's digital strategy is implemented.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to foster positive, strategic relationships with peers, customers, and stakeholders, and a strong customer-focused approach.
  • Proven experience as a CIO or in a similar executive-level technology leadership role, taking a team from current state to desired future state in both technology, operating model, and cultural change.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to align technology strategies with organisational goals, optimising technology investments through disciplined budget and program management.
  • Broad experience of leading large-scale business and IT projects to safe and successful delivery.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to implementing the Department's Aboriginal Education Policy and upholding the Department's Partnership Agreement with the NSW AECG and to ensure quality outcomes.
  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline and contemporary knowledge and experience in enterprise-level IT infrastructure, systems, applications, and cyber security.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the value of public education.
  • Hold (or be willing to obtain) a valid clearance to work with children (Working with Children Check).
