Job Overview

Criminologists and legal experts are invited to apply for a challenging leadership position in a dynamic environment where they can make a difference. ">Key Responsibilities
  • The successful candidate will act as a specialist legal practitioner providing expert advice and assistance to investigators, officers, and other disciplines on complex aspects of criminal investigations, police powers, management, disruption, reportable offenders, and response to major incidents.
  • They will provide oral and written briefings on complex aspects of criminal law, evidence, administrative law, statutory interpretation, policy procedures, risk management, and operational law enforcement initiatives affecting the Queensland Police Service.
  • The incumbent will undertake drafting warrants, settling complex affidavits, and applications appearing on behalf of police officers from the Queensland Police Service for more complex applications, principally covert warrants.
  • They will appear and provide assistance in an advisory capacity in court tribunal hearings as required.
  • The successful candidate will liaise with relevant internal units of the Queensland Police Service and external agencies, including the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and government law enforcement agencies.
  • They will provide high-quality confidential advice to senior officers and members of the senior executive on complicated sensitive operational legal matters.
  • The candidate will assist in the development and delivery of specialist training programs and projects.
  • They will supervise and mentor legal officers in Crime Intelligence Legal Services, as required by the manager of Crime Intelligence Legal Services.
Role Requirements
  • The successful applicant must be eligible for immediate admission as a barrister or solicitor to the Supreme Court of Queensland, with eligibility for enrolment to practice in the Federal High Courts of Australia.
  • Applicants must obtain and maintain a security clearance at a minimum level of Negative Vetting Level 1.

Qualifications

  • The successful candidate must possess a degree in law from a recognised tertiary institution or equivalent qualifications.
Other
  • Successful applicants will undergo a psychometric assessment prior to appointment, and whilst performing duties in this position, they may be exposed to material of a graphic and sensitive nature.
  • Successful applicants are required to perform duties at locations directed by the Legal Division.
  • A driver's licence is desirable.

Applications will remain current for up to 6 months in the occupational group Justice and Legal.
