About Us: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service is a not-for-profit, community-based organisation that delivers innovative, professional criminal, civil and family law services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients throughout Queensland.

Job Description: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legal Practitioner to join our team. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of Family and Civil Law proceedings, including casework relating to Child Protection and Domestic Violence Applications, as well as Civil Litigation generally, Anti-discrimination matters, Estates, and Consumer Protection type matters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert casework assistance and information directly to clients and external stakeholders.
  • Develop culturally competent legal services and work collaboratively with the Principal Legal Officer and Directors of Law (Family and Civil) and immediate legal team.
  • Manage client files and casework statistical reports, and present written information and online applications.
  • Work after hours if necessary and assist in the development of Court Support/Field Officers' and other legal staff members' training/education.

Selection Criteria:

  • Essential Criteria:
    • Alignment to the values and vision of ATSILS and an appreciation of and sensitivity to the challenges our clients have faced, and continue to face, in their fight for and their right to justice and equity.
    • Admission as a Legal Practitioner within the State of Queensland or holder of (or eligibility for immediate acquisition of) a current Practising Certificate, and be admitted as a Legal Practitioner or Barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland (or be capable of immediate admission), and the Australian High Court.
    • Sound interpersonal and communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to empathetically convey sound information or advice, and to present written information, casework statistical reports, and online applications.
    • Experience (or an in-depth understanding) of both high-level client services in Family and Civil Law proceedings.
    • Confidence in and knowledge of legislation, including key legislation, practices and procedures in the fields of Family Law (Family, Child Protection and Domestic Violence matters), and for Civil, a range of legislation such as the Succession Act.
    • Preparedness to work after hours if necessary, and willingness to assist in the development of Court Support/Field Officers' and other legal staff members' training/education.
  • Desirable Criteria:
    • Ability to use Microsoft Office in a Windows networked environment.
    • Current Queensland Driver Licence and ability to drive in all reasonable conditions may be required for the role, dependent upon the location.
    • Willingness to undergo a Criminal Record Check to achieve a National Police Certificate (Australia-wide Disclosable Criminal History).
    • Minimum two (2) years post admission experience is ideal.
    • Ability to assist the Regional Manager on duty lawyer matters during periods of demand is highly regarded.
