Environmental Leadership and Cultural Preservation Specialist

The Environmental Leadership and Cultural Preservation Specialist plays a crucial role in the delivery of the Kija ranger program, providing strong leadership to a team of female Indigenous rangers. The successful candidate will assist in the execution of the annual works plan, developed by Kija traditional owners, which encompasses various cultural and natural resource management activities.
This position requires a dynamic and resilient individual with proven skills and capacity in Indigenous engagement, land and sea cultural and natural resource management, project management, and administration. The ideal candidate will have experience managing small teams and coordinating on-ground projects, preferably with Indigenous organisations.
The Environmental Leadership and Cultural Preservation Specialist will be based in Warmun (Turkey Creek) and work across the Kija country in the East Kimberley in Western Australia. This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about environmental conservation and Indigenous cultural preservation.
Key Responsibilities- Supervise and coordinate the day-to-day activities of the Kija Women Rangers to ensure delivery of the annual works plan.
- Collaborate with the Kija Ranger Coordinator, Healthy Country Advisory Committee, and KLC's LSMU staff to develop, monitor, and report on ranger activities.
- Ensure effective administrative management of the ranger program, including timesheets, casual rangers, and Traditional Owner payments.
- Plan and participate in field activities to remote locations associated with completing the work plan and fee-for-service opportunities.
- Mentor the Rangers to develop their personal and project skills, leadership abilities, and work ethic.
- Support on-the-job training, identify training needs, and liaise with the KLC Training Coordinator to engage with training providers.
- A qualification in environmental management, conservation biology, anthropology, community development, or a related field.
- Experience managing small teams and/or coordinating on-ground natural and cultural resource management projects, preferably with Indigenous organisations.
- Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal social and cultural challenges in Northern Australia.
- Ability to work independently in a remote area and maintain focus, positivity, and organisation in challenging environments.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and community consultation skills.
- Experience in project administration and finance management, including grant writing, reporting, and acquittals.
