POSITION OVERVIEW

An exceptional opportunity is available for a researcher within the School of Natural Sciences at Macquarie University. We are on the lookout for a qualified Postdoctoral Research Fellow to become part of a team renowned for delivering high-impact research outcomes in the field of biomedical synthetic biology. We invite a dedicated and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to engage in our synthetic biology initiative aimed at developing innovative biological therapies for Alzheimer's disease.

The selected candidate will focus on engineering novel biologics using yeast and plant systems to create groundbreaking therapeutic strategies for Alzheimer's disease, which will be evaluated in pre-clinical human neuron cultures and genetic mouse models. The role offers a proactive environment where the successful candidate will have the autonomy to influence the project's strategic direction. This position is supported by an Ideas Grant from the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

Reporting to Dr. Briardo Llorente, your responsibilities will include:

Contributing to the research and development of innovative therapeutic strategies for Alzheimer's disease Performing experimental work, data analysis, and result interpretation; Establishing and nurturing relationships with key stakeholders (e.g., collaborators); Mentoring master's and/or PhD students; Disseminating research findings through scientific publications and conferences

The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in synthetic biology, molecular biology, biotechnology, or a closely related field. ABOUT THE INSTITUTION

Our cutting-edge laboratory is co-located with the at Macquarie University, equipped with advanced robotic platforms and staffed by highly qualified professionals. The university also boasts a sophisticated plant growth facility with controlled environments, including a PC2 glasshouse certified for research involving genetically modified plants.

You will be part of a large and vibrant community of researchers from around the globe, all striving to advance the frontiers of synthetic biology. This project is part of an ongoing partnership with Professor Lars Ittner, Director of the Dementia Research Centre, aimed at translating research into innovative therapies for Alzheimer's disease.

SELECTION CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

PhD in synthetic biology, molecular biology, biotechnology, or a related discipline. Experience in plant synthetic biology, genetic engineering, molecular biology, and biochemistry. Proven ability to lead research initiatives and collaborate effectively within a research group and with external partners. Capability to foster a supportive environment for research students, including supervision. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong analytical thinking and independent problem-solving abilities.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Relevant publications in plant synthetic biology.
