Mathematical Modelling Project

Data-informed mathematical models are essential for predicting complex phenomena and making informed decisions. In the context of locust outbreaks, accurate modelling of locust hopper band movement can have significant environmental and economic benefits.

Developing Predictive Models

The primary objective of this project is to develop predictive data-informed mathematical models for the collective movement of locust hopper bands. To achieve this goal, we will incorporate individual animal characteristics such as hunger and epigenetic phase into existing models. This will enable us to better understand how these factors influence the movement of the locusts.

Project Scope

We will focus on improving current models through the inclusion of variation of individual animal characteristics and resource distribution. Field and laboratory observations will be used to refine the model's parameters and validate its predictive efficacy. Techniques from data science will be applied to develop strategies for optimal application of barrier treatment.

This research is part of a national initiative providing opportunities for collaborative work and professional development.
