About the Role

The Australian Government Department of Home Affairs is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Border Force Supervisor to join our Sponsor Monitoring Unit in Queensland. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for leading and supervising a team of Senior Border Force Officers who undertake sponsor monitoring activities and operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply and interpret legislation and associated policy documents relating to sponsor obligations
  • Undertake site visits and conduct client interviews relating to monitoring or on referral from other business areas
  • Interrogate various internal and external IT systems and applications in order to assess veracity of complex allegations to determine priority of risk and workload allocation
  • Manage high tempo compliance monitoring caseload and prepare complex recommendation reports
  • Draft and issue Notices of Intent to Take Action (NOITTA) and Infringement Notices where breaches of obligations are found
  • Draft Notices of Decision on behalf of the EL1 Delegate
  • Recommend administrative penalties such as barring or cancelling sponsor
  • Provide expertise and technical knowledge to support Sponsor Monitoring operations
  • Ensure competent knowledge of, and team compliance with, ABF and SMU operational and administrative frameworks and organisational obligations
  • Set long range and short term priorities for the work area (including workload allocation) according to operational priorities and risk based assessment
  • Through intel-driven, risk-based approach identify emerging issues, target cohorts and assess appropriate compliance responses to identified risks
  • Ensure Sponsor Monitoring team meets or exceeds its key performance measures on both a qualitative and quantitative level and contribute to relevant reporting requirements
  • Evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management and risk assessment activities within the sphere of SMU Operations
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders including other law enforcement agencies to disclose/request information appropriately, progress and de-conflict caseloads
  • Manage complex enquiries via telephone, email and written correspondence through to appropriate resolution

Requirements

  • Effective proven leadership abilities and team managerial skills
  • Flexibility and initiative in response to planning and allocating work in accordance with known and emerging priorities, including assisting in the completion of work outside of assigned responsibilities
  • Good understanding of the relevant legislative powers of officers, ability to lead operational activity competently within those legislative boundaries, applying legislation, policies and procedural instructions to more complex case scenarios to make sound decisions and recommendations
  • Highly developed analytical abilities to identify and assess program integrity risk factors, research and collect data from a variety of sources, interrogate systems to inform understanding of the risk priority and the appropriate compliance related responses for managing the threat and risk

  • High standard of verbal and written communication skills to enable production and role-modelling of clear, accurate notes, briefs, correspondence and reports and clear unambiguous communication with others
  • Aptitude in interacting with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, sensitive to differences of language, gender, religion etc., while managing interactions with respect and courtesy at all times
  • Positive, ongoing and proven commitment to addressing WHS risks appropriately in accordance with WH&S legislation and guidelines
