Monash University invites applications for a PhD Scholarship in Social Science and Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Energy Futures. This exciting opportunity is part of the Energy Futures research program, which focuses on the social implications of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, in the energy sector.
About the Project
We are seeking an outstanding PhD candidate with a background in qualitative social science and experience in ethnographic research to investigate how artificial intelligence can support sustainable energy outcomes for diverse Australians. The successful candidate will join our world-leading Energy Futures team and contribute to the development of innovative methodologies for understanding the social implications of AI in energy systems.
Key Research Questions
- How can AI systems be designed to align with diverse people's everyday priorities, values, and routines to support a sustainable energy transition?
- What are the ethical and privacy implications of using AI in energy systems, and how can these be addressed?
- How can participatory and inclusive modes of communication and consumer engagement be built into AI-supported energy systems?
Requirements
To be considered for this opportunity, you should have a strong background in qualitative social science, experience in ethnographic research, and a demonstrated interest in the social implications of emerging technologies. You should also have excellent communication and research skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Selection Process
The selection process will consist of two stages. Stage 1 requires the submission of an Expression of Interest (EOI) with a draft research proposal. Candidates who pass this stage will be invited to discuss their ideas with the principal supervisor before developing a full proposal and submitting an application.
