Role Overview

A counsellor advocate provides expert assessment and counseling services, utilizing a diverse range of psychosocial therapeutic interventions. These services address both the complex psychological impact of torture and trauma as well as the broader social and economic determinants of mental health.

Additionally, this role involves advocacy, including liaison and facilitated referrals with relevant health, community, education, and legal services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments to develop clear formulations and client-centred goals.
  • Provide developmentally appropriate trauma-informed and trauma-focused counselling and therapeutic interventions using evidence-based modalities.
  • Deliver psychoeducation in individual, family, and group settings.
  • Identify critical issues affecting clients' wellbeing, mental health, and safety, and develop strategies for responding to those issues, including making referrals and undertaking advocacy.
Requirements:
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in psychology, social work, or related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in counselling, preferably in a similar trauma recovery context.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting psychosocial assessments and risk assessments.
  • Ability to write professional psychosocial reports for key stakeholders.
  • Good understanding of negotiating and advocating with service systems in Victoria to support clients and their families.
  • Previous experience working with Asylum Seeker clients is advantageous.
