About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Structural Engineer to join our team at ASC, where you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operations of the Collins Class Submarines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide engineering support for the sustainment of the Collins Class Submarines during maintenance activities and in-service defects.
  • Develop work scope and risk assessments for in-service defects, emerging maintenance and reliability issues, requiring knowledge of engineering fundamentals and the Defence Seaworthiness Management System.
  • Develop and review structural documentation, including root cause analysis, structural calculations, work instructions, defect assessments, repair procedures, test procedures, and engineering reports.
  • Produce safety and technical risk assessments in accordance with the Defence Seaworthiness Management System.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in submarine design, pressure hull, shock and vibration, pressure vessels, piping, fasteners, stress analysis, fatigue and fracture, support equipment, and general structural engineering.
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Aviation, Naval Architecture, or similar) degree that satisfies membership of the Institution of Engineers Australia at MIEAust level.
  • Experience conducting structural analysis within a heavy engineering, shipbuilding, or defence industry.
  • Ability to work unsupervised and collaborate with a multi-discipline team of engineers and technical personnel.
  • Experience working through integration issues with stakeholders to find acceptable solutions.
  • Ability to build and maintain interpersonal and professional relationships with stakeholders, as well as drive personal development.
  • Eligibility for Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status.
Desirable Competencies and Experiences
  • Current Baseline or NV1 Clearance.
  • Experience with naval maintenance and/or operation of maritime systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Defence Seaworthiness Management System (DSWMS) and its application to Engineering Delegations and Risk Levels.
  • Knowledge of submarine and pressure hull design.
  • Knowledge of operating in submarines or the shipbuilding engineering environment.
  • Experience in providing technical repair instructions and/or overseeing work conducted.
