Job Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist

The Anatomical Pathology Department at John Hunter Hospital is seeking a skilled medical laboratory scientist to join their team.

Job Description:

This role involves working in a busy and dynamic environment, conducting tests for surgical patients across Newcastle and the Hunter Valley region.

As a member of the Anatomical Pathology team, you will be responsible for specimen management including triage, direct transfer, and dissection.

You will work closely with the supervising pathologist and other team members to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the specimen reception and cut-up areas.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in science or medical laboratory science.
  • Postgraduate study in specimen dissection and/or extensive experience performing non-complex and complex specimen dissection and direct transfer.
  • Demonstrated high-level written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with terminology required for specimen dissection.
  • Ability to exhibit initiative, be self-directed, and demonstrate ongoing learning and development.
  • Sound decision-making capability with an unblemished track record in relation to specimen handling and patient safety.
  • Experience working as a collaborative team member and autonomously.
  • Solid understanding of pre-analytical and specimen cut-up requirements in a diagnostic laboratory.

Working Arrangements:

This is a permanent full-time position. To be eligible for appointment, applicants must have Australian citizenship or permanent residency.
