Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and skilled professional to fill the role of Assistant Secretary, leading our efforts in agricultural trade and market access. The successful candidate will be responsible for fostering cooperation and engagement within Australia and with governments and agriculture stakeholders in major trading partner countries.

Key responsibilities include promoting effective and coordinated engagement between our department and our major agriculture trading partners through regular two-way communication, influencing Australian government policy settings, and tracking, analysing and communicating major developments that may impact on our agriculture trade interests.

The ideal candidate will have a substantial record of achievement and delivery of results in international contexts, strong written and verbal communication skills, and excellent stakeholder relationship skills and experience both domestically and internationally.

They should also possess a strong knowledge or understanding of the international environment as it relates to agriculture and food security, and knowledge or understanding of our department's international interests.

Requirements
  • Ability to deal with uncertainty and identify and respond to opportunities as they arise
  • Outstanding leadership skills, including an ability to lead, manage, coach and support staff
  • Substantial record of achievement and delivery of results in particular in international contexts
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to represent the department at a range of international meetings and forums
  • Excellent stakeholder relationship skills and experience, both domestically and internationally
  • Strong knowledge or understanding of the international environment as it relates to agriculture and food security
