Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Head of Special Education to join our Executive Leadership Team. The successful candidate will play a vital role in supporting our students to access the curriculum and become lifelong learners.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the Special Education Program to provide essential guidance to classroom teachers for students with disabilities.
  • Provide expert advice to the school leadership team, classroom teachers, and other staff to develop, plan, and implement effective accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Coordinate and advise on targeted teaching for students requiring a continuum of support and intervention.
  • Be part of a team that provides support, advice, and advocacy when involved with case management for students needing tailored adjustments to student programming in the context of the special education program.
  • Assist classroom teachers and other school staff in accessing departmental or external specialist services, professional development, and necessary supports.
  • Participate in school decision-making processes and professional development to contribute to school goals, vision, and planning.
  • Implement and coordinate school-wide systems, including data systems, to monitor students with disabilities and maintain the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disabilities.
  • Build and sustain partnerships with parents, other government agencies, and community groups to support students with disabilities.
  • Manage and coordinate the provision of high-quality advice and support to inform curriculum design, inclusive pedagogical practices, and delivery to ensure that all students can access and fully participate in learning alongside their similar-aged peers.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, staff, and parents to support students with disabilities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze data and develop effective strategies to support students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of departmental and external specialist services, professional development, and necessary supports.
