Job Summary:

The Correctional Counsellor role is a critical position within the multidisciplinary mental health team at Queensland Corrective Services. As a Correctional Counsellor, you will contribute to community safety by providing mental health screening, welfare assistance, intervention, and approved programs to offenders.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Mental Health Screening and Triage: Conduct thorough mental health and suicide or self-harm risk screenings of offenders, documenting all information accurately.
  2. Welfare Assistance and Intervention: Respond to offender requests for support, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders as required to provide effective welfare assistance.
  3. Interventions and Programs: Deliver individual or group-based interventions aimed at developing coping skills and building resilience, utilizing evidence-based practices.
  4. Case Management: Manage a caseload of individuals with mental health, disability, or other vulnerabilities, utilizing effective time management and prioritization skills.
  5. Professional Development: Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain knowledge of contemporary offender rehabilitation research, practices, legislation, policy, and procedures.
  6. Team Collaboration: Participate in professional supervision activities, team meetings, and provide consultancy services to other unit members.
  7. Record Keeping and Data Management: Ensure accurate and up-to-date records for appropriate authorities and the Integrated Offender Management system (IOMS).
  8. Security and Confidentiality: Maintain the safety and security of self and others, as well as the security and confidentiality of QCS property and information.
  9. Community Integration: Liaise with external service providers to optimize offender community integration, ensuring the highest standards of community safety.
  10. Advice and Support: Provide advice to appropriate authorities regarding community re-integration and parole processes, as well as timely advice to offenders about available services and community expectations.
