Amazon Rainforest Medical Placement Opportunity

This unique opportunity offers motivated and adventurous interns the chance to gain hands-on experience in medicine and public health within the Amazon rainforest. With its unparalleled biodiversity, this setting presents a one-of-a-kind environment for analyzing the intersection of Western and traditional medicine.


Interns will be based in the Napo province, where there is a significant need for healthcare and educational resources. They will have the option to work at local hospitals, health clinics, or public health organizations, supporting staff in various capacities.


  • Assist medical professionals with their daily tasks, such as shadowing doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other health experts.
  • Participate in medical home visits and brigades in local communities, providing essential healthcare services.
  • Support on-going public health projects, contributing to initiatives like hygiene and nutrition talks with school-age children, interactive health games, and creating informative materials for parents.
  • Have the opportunity to design and implement your own public health project, tailored to the needs of the placement organization and approved by your supervisor.

Living with host families allows interns to immerse themselves in the local culture and community. Host families often reside in rural areas close to the forest and may have agroforestry farms, offering interns a chance to learn about sustainable practices and participate in farm activities.


A typical day for an intern involves waking up with the host family, attending to morning routines, and then heading to work around 7:30/8am. After completing their duties, interns return to their host family's home for lunch before resuming work in the afternoon. Evenings and weekends are spent exploring the local area, participating in sports, clubs, teaching English, meeting fellow interns, or embarking on weekend trips to nearby tourist destinations.
