Job Title:

Artificial Intelligence Researcher Position

We are seeking highly motivated and experienced researchers to undertake fundamental machine learning research for projects aligned to one of more of the following themes:

  • Theme 1: Tackling Misinformation with AI Integrity
  • Theme 2: Safe AI in Real-World Applications
  • Theme 3: Diverse AI Systems for Safety and Diversity
  • Theme 4: Explainable AI for a Changing World

The University is home to the largest computer vision and machine learning research group in Australia, comprising over 180 members including academics, research staff, and students. The team works on a mixture of fundamental and commercially oriented research projects in computer vision and machine learning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • A PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • Programming experience in Python, C++, or other relevant languages, with expertise in deep neural networks.
  • Strong mathematical capability, particularly for Theme 1, with applicants holding an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in mathematics strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Experience and demonstratable knowledge in deep learning and one or more of the following: transformer networks, implicit neural functions, graph neural networks, and/or probabilistic graphical models; and causal inference.
  • An outstanding publication record in top-tier machine learning and/or computer vision conferences or journals, commensurate with experience and opportunity.
  • A strong work ethic, and the ability to work well independently, and as a member of a broader team, including with industrial, educational, and community partners.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, with an ability to communicate scientific ideas to an expert audience.
  • Commitment to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion, with applications from traditionally under-represented groups within the Responsible AI community encouraged to apply, as well as those who may have experienced more unusual educational and/or career pathways prior to completing their PhD.
