Job Title: Horticultural Crop Grower Specialist

Horticultural crop growers manage all stages of crop production, from planning to harvest, focusing on sustainability, efficiency, and quality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Selecting and planting seeds, seedlings, cuttings, bulbs, or grafted plants to establish and propagate crops effectively.
  • Organising and coordinating horticultural production from soil preparation to harvest, considering seasonal, environmental, and market factors.
  • Monitoring crops for pests, diseases, nutrient deficiencies, or water stress, and implementing effective measures.
  • Maintaining crop health and productivity through cultivating, pruning, thinning, de-budding, training plants, and managing growing conditions optimally.
  • Managing irrigation and fertigation systems to achieve maximum crop growth and yield.
  • Coordinating post-harvest activities including grading, packaging, storage, and dispatch of horticultural produce efficiently.
  • Recruiting, training, and supervising staff to ensure efficient and safe production practices.
  • Recording and analysing data on crop performance, production activities, costs, and sales to inform business decisions.

Strong knowledge of horticultural practices and crop management techniques is essential. Problem-solving ability and sound decision-making in farm operations are also required. Good record-keeping, organisational, and communication skills are a must.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • AQF Bachelor degree or higher in Horticulture, or equivalent qualifications or relevant practical experience.
  • Minimum 1 year of hands-on experience in horticultural production.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make informed decisions.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
