About the Role

Australian Astronomical Optics - Macquarie (AAO-MQ) is seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the development and delivery of precision opto-mechanical elements for significant scientific instruments used on international astronomy facilities.

The successful candidate will be responsible for technical leadership, project team leadership, and ensuring thorough documentation and detailing of all opto-mechanical project elements. They will work closely with Project Managers to deliver project artefacts on time, on budget, and to agreed specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the opto-mechanical engineering design and delivery of projects from inception and design through fabrication, testing, assembly, commissioning, and handover.
  • Ensure the thorough documentation and detailing of all opto-mechanical project elements including design, fabrication artefacts, and plans.
  • Work closely with Project Managers to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of project artefacts.
  • Provide mentoring, advice, and guidance to other engineers in the team and collaborate with AAO teams and international consortium partners to resolve engineering and technical challenges.
  • Develop, analyse, and manage specific concepts, systems, and project subsystems to ensure delivery to agreed project timelines.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have completed a Master's or Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline. You will have deep experience as a specialist technical Mechanical Engineer with excellent skills in opto-mechanical modelling, analysis, and CAD design.

You will also have a passion for analysis for precision mechanical engineering and an enthusiasm for ensuring high-quality product and design documentation. Experience working on telescopes, in vacuum and cryogenic precision instrumentation, FEA, thermal and vibration analysis, and management are highly valued.

The salary range for this position is $115,030-$127,995 per annum plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading. This is a full-time, 3-year fixed-term appointment located at Macquarie University Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde.
