Master Of Teaching Scholarship For Auslan Professionals
4 days ago
The Opportunity
This prestigious Master's scholarship is part of the ARC-funded project "Transforming Auslan Education in Australia", a collaborative effort between leading research institutions.
As part of this industry fellowship, you will join a dynamic research team and contribute to the broader project while pursuing your own distinct Master's project. The details of the Master's project are open to negotiation, but it should focus on one or more areas within the broader project:
- Developing Auslan teacher skills and training pathways
- Exploring Auslan teacher cognition
- Implementing and evaluating Auslan learning resources in TAFE classrooms
It is expected that the project will involve collaboration with experienced teachers from renowned institutions as part of the participant/co-design pool, but you may also work with a wider group of Auslan professionals.
You will be based at Monash University, one of Australia's top universities, consistently ranking among the world's best. With a strong reputation for social sciences, including linguistics, sociology, politics, and interpreting and translation studies, we offer a diverse and vibrant academic environment. Our scholars have secured national and international competitive funding, solidifying our reputation as leaders in research excellence.
The ideal candidate will be a fluent Auslan user with demonstrated experience as an Auslan teacher and/or trainer. We strongly encourage Deaf applicants, particularly those with research expertise in Auslan teaching, Auslan linguistics, or Deaf Studies. You should demonstrate strong connections with the Deaf and Auslan teacher communities through lived experience or a track record of successful collaboration/co-research with Deaf Auslan teachers.
In assessing applications, the selection committee will prioritise candidates holding an Australian (or equivalent international) Honour's or Master's degree, with a significant research component and first-class honours/H1 awarded. Relevant research experience and/or industry experience beyond degree qualifications will also be considered.
Scholarship recipients must be enrolled on campus. While normally enrolled full-time, those with disabilities/health conditions preventing full-time enrolment can be considered for part-time enrolment.
You will be expected to commence your studies by June 2025. However, some flexibility may be granted regarding the commencement date.
Eligibility Requirements
- Australian (or equivalent international) Honour's or Master's degree, with a significant research component and first-class honours/H1 awarded
- Relevant research experience and/or industry experience beyond degree qualifications
- Fluent Auslan user with demonstrated experience as an Auslan teacher and/or trainer
- Strong connections with the Deaf and Auslan teacher communities through lived experience or a track record of successful collaboration/co-research with Deaf Auslan teachers

- A cover letter outlining your suitability
- A brief research proposal not exceeding 750 words in length, aligning with the broad project objectives and demonstrating an understanding of the research area
- A curriculum vitae, featuring published works, conference presentations, and relevant work experience
- A comprehensive statement of academic records, degree certificates, and official grading systems (if available), supported by scanned copies of relevant certified documentation
