About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Policy Advisor to join our team at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. As a Policy Advisor, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality policy advice to support the Prime Minister and Government in achieving their policy objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to inform policy advice and support the delivery of the Government's agenda.
  • Develop and lead the development of high-quality, considered, and timely advice and briefings on health, aged care, the care and support economy, and/or Commonwealth-state policy matters.
  • Support the decision-making of the Commonwealth Cabinet, National Cabinet, and parliamentary processes, including drafting and coordinating submissions, and providing advice on submissions in the Budget and MYEFO context.
  • Drive a positive, innovative, and inclusive culture across the Department.
  • Supervise, guide, and mentor junior members of the team and act as a senior adviser for short periods when required.
Requirements
  • Strategic judgement and experience in getting across complex issues quickly, and be confident in taking initiative to support sound policy advice.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, and be able to quickly build strong, collaborative relationships with internal and external colleagues, while representing the Department and the Commonwealth with integrity and professionalism.
  • Excellent communication skills, tailoring your communication to your audience, and be able to draft agendas, minutes, papers, briefs, correspondence, and other written materials.
  • Demonstrated resilience and a proven capacity to deliver under pressure in a fast-paced environment with limited supervision.
  • Critical thinking skills, able to contribute and challenge ideas on a wide range of issues.
Eligibility
  • Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the APS unless the Agency Head has agreed otherwise, in writing. At the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, to be eligible for this position, you should be an Australian Citizen at the closing date of application, unless exceptional circumstances apply.
  • The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance, or hold a current security clearance of an appropriate level.
  • The successful candidate will be assessed through our pre-employment screening checks, such as an Australian Criminal History Check, and will normally be subject to a six-month probation period if new to the APS or has not yet completed their probation period elsewhere in the APS.
