Materials Scientist

The role of Materials Scientist is a critical component in the development and integration of multifunctional materials into Defence platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop novel composite manufacturing methods to optimize the Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) benefit in Defence platforms;
  • Design and develop new methods for integrating electrical and electronic materials into composite structures that can withstand extreme military environments;
  • Establish advanced multi-material printing systems to enable the automated production of complex multifunctional composite structures required to enhance performance of Defence Structures;
  • Communicate complex technical results and their implications effectively to Defence leaders, stakeholders, and external partners; and
  • Contribute to maintaining a positive, inclusive, and respectful culture within diverse and multi-disciplinary teams.

The Platforms Division aims to leverage world-leading science, technology, and partnerships to deliver game-changing capabilities for Australia's future. The Aerospace Materials Branch is primarily concerned with deploying materials in aerospace platforms and weapon systems, as well as supporting National security, Land, and Maritime domains.

Our staff and partners bring diverse expertise in materials (functional and structural), advanced manufacturing & processing, advanced sensing, and computational materials modelling. This rapidly evolving capability enables a wide range of Defence challenges. To ensure impact, the culture in this team is very collaborative, both within DSTG and the broader S&T ecosystem.
