Position Overview

The successful candidate will lead our systematic botany research program and be responsible for the scientific curation of our national herbarium.

This role requires a mid-career researcher with expertise in systematic botany, plant taxonomy, and Australian flora. You will collaborate with a diverse team to deliver impactful research outcomes and drive stewardship of our herbarium's 1.4 million specimens.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead research programs and oversee the scientific curation of the national herbarium.
  • Ensure botanical collections are accurately identified and names and classifications follow current accepted standards.
  • Collaborate with a diverse team of scientists, Early-Career Researchers, and technical staff to deliver impactful research outcomes.
  • Manage a team of four independent researchers supporting their growth while advancing your own research program in systematic botany.
  • Build leadership and management skills while continuing to develop an independent research program in systematic botany.

Requirements

  • Specialized Expertise: Extensive knowledge of systematic botany, plant taxonomy, and Australian flora.
  • Research Proficiency: Skilled in research techniques such as specimen collection, microscopy, phylogenomics, and data interpretation using botanical databases.
  • Academic Excellence: Tertiary qualifications (PhD) in Biological or Botanical Science would be highly regarded.
  • Leadership & Mentorship: Experience supervising or mentoring scientists or staff, with a collaborative and self-directed approach to leadership.
