About the Job

This role is a great opportunity to make a real difference in protecting the marine environment. As an Environmental Protection Coordinator, you will play a critical role in managing legislative processes and ensuring Australia's domestic legislation implements international conventions relating to preventing environmental harm from shipping.

You will work closely with the executive to ensure timely and effective implementation of legislative changes and provide support through effective briefing.

Main Responsibilities

  • Coordinating the identification of changes in international agreements, regulations and guidelines and ensuring that domestic legislation appropriately implements environmental protections adopted at the International Maritime Organization.
  • Assisting internal teams to contribute to the analysis and formulation of policy related to maritime environment protection issues and preparing documentation relating to the introduction of new and amending legislation and marine orders.
  • Preparing Australia's position and supporting briefing on key issues for the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) and Pollution Prevention and Response Sub-Committee (PPR).
  • Supporting research, analysis and policy development on environmental issues and regulatory responses, both in Australia and internationally which contribute to the Action Plan to address marine plastic litter from ships.
  • Providing administrative support for consultation with relevant stakeholders, including arranging and participating in stakeholder meetings as necessary.

Requirements

  • An understanding of international conventions, legislation and policies relating to marine environment protection, or the ability to quickly gain this knowledge.
  • Basic analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to assist in synthesizing complex information to develop options or advice.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear and concise reports and briefings.
  • Able to work collaboratively with others as part of a team and engage with stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under general supervision and deliver results to a high standard in a timely manner.
