About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Lawyer to join our team at The Garvan Institute Of Medical Research. As a key member of our Professional Services Team, you will play a critical role in providing legal advice and support to our research activities and commercial transactions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Negotiate, review, and manage agreements relating to our research activities and intellectual property.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws and policies, including staying up-to-date with developments and interpreting laws in the context of our activities.
  • Provide legal advice and support on a diverse range of corporate and commercial legal matters.
  • Work closely with other Institute divisions to ensure agreements are consistent with our strategic objectives and legal obligations.
  • Manage external contracting arrangements, including monitoring activities post-contract and renegotiations.
Policies, Systems, and Processes
  • Develop, review, and update templates, clauses, policies, and procedures related to our Legal Office activities.
  • Work with Legal Office management and organizational tools to identify and implement process improvements.
  • Coordinate and prepare approval documentation for Garvan executives and/or Board.
Staff Mentoring and Training
  • Train and mentor more junior staff, including delegation and supervision of tasks.
  • Develop and deliver internal training programs as needed.
Management and Internal Reporting
  • Assist the Head of Legal in preparing reports and advice for the Garvan Board and Executive Team.
About You

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Senior Lawyer with a strong background in commercial contracts, intellectual property law, and legal compliance. The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor of Laws and a current practicing certificate from the Law Society of NSW (or eligibility to immediately apply for such certification).
  • At least 8 years of post-qualification experience in a similar role.
  • Experience in a medical research institute environment is preferred.
  • Excellent commercial awareness, relationship building, influencing, and negotiating skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional team player with ability to build rapport and maintain solid working relationships.
  • Proactive with excellent time management and organizational skills.
