The Australian Government offers a career path for law graduates in the Legal Stream of the Graduate Program.

This stream provides an opportunity to work in law within the government and develop skills through various development programs.

The Legal Stream comprises two sub-streams: Legal Policy and Legal Practice. Both offer fulfilling work, challenges, and opportunities for professional growth.

As a graduate in the AGGP Legal Stream, your duties will vary based on your sub-stream and placement. You may work on legal policy development or assist with legal advice within an in-house legal team.

You will have the opportunity to specify your preferences for sub-streams and agencies, shaping your career path.

The program provides meaningful work, challenges, and growth opportunities in a supportive, flexible environment contributing positively to society.

Indigenous recruitment measures are included to support First Nations candidates.

Most roles are based in Canberra, with some available in other cities and regional centers. Relocation assistance is available for eligible candidates.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must have completed at least a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor by 31 December 2026. For the Legal Practice sub-stream, admission as a Lawyer or willingness to complete Practical Legal Training is required.

Applicants must submit a complete application before the closing date and provide proof of eligibility, including:

  • Australian citizenship
  • Qualification completion by 31 December 2026
  • Recent qualification between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2026
  • Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance
  • Willingness to undergo checks

Applicants demonstrating Indigenous status must provide evidence of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander identity.

Selection Process

The selection process includes:
