The Australian Government Graduate Program Legal Stream, led by the Attorney-General's Department, offers an exciting and rewarding career in law within the Australian Government.

The Legal Stream consists of two sub-streams:

Legal Policy
Legal Practice

Begin a full-time ongoing position in an Australian Government department or agency, with a salary range of $60,000-$80,000 per year.
Access mentoring, on-the-job training, and formal learning opportunities.
Advance to a higher classification and salary upon successful program completion.

About the role
As a graduate in the AGGP Legal Stream, your work will vary depending on your sub-stream and placement.
You may contribute to legal policy development, assist with legal policy administration, or provide legal advice within an in-house legal team of a Commonwealth agency.
You will have the opportunity to specify your preferred sub-streams (Legal Policy, Legal Practice, or both) and agencies during the application process.
The program provides meaningful work, challenges, and growth opportunities in a supportive, flexible environment, making a difference to Australians' lives.
For the 2027 intake, the Department will implement an Affirmative Measures – Indigenous recruitment process alongside the program to support First Nations candidates.
First Nations applicants are encouraged to apply.
Most roles are based in Canberra, with some in other cities and regional centers.
Relocation assistance may be available for eligible candidates.
Who can apply
Applicants must have completed a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor by 31 December 2026.
For Legal Practice, admission as a Lawyer or willingness to complete Practical Legal Training is required.
Applicants must submit a complete application before the deadline and provide:

Australian citizenship proof
Legal qualification completed or expected between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2026
Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
Willingness to undergo necessary checks
