Senior Legal Expert

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Senior Legal Expert to join our Indictable Crime team. Your primary focus will be on the carriage of serious indictable files, utilizing your legal knowledge to provide high-quality casework, advocacy, and legal advice services to individuals facing significant legal challenges.

As a senior member of the team, you will take on a leadership role by mentoring and supervising junior lawyers across our criminal law practice, ensuring they deliver exceptional client service and grow professionally under your guidance.

This is a maximum term position up to 12 months with part-time considered, in a parental leave backfill position. The successful candidate will work closely with our clients and stakeholders, providing expert legal advice and representation in the courtroom.

The ideal candidate will possess experience in criminal law practice, particularly in indictable offences. They will also have the ability to present compelling arguments and effectively represent clients in court.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carriage of serious indictable files
  • Providing high-quality casework, advocacy, and legal advice services to individuals facing significant legal challenges
  • Mentoring and supervising junior lawyers across our criminal law practice
  • Ensuring junior lawyers deliver exceptional client service and grow professionally under your guidance

Requirements:

  • Experience in criminal law practice, particularly in indictable offences
  • Ability to present compelling arguments and effectively represent clients in court
  • High level of interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and negotiate with diverse stakeholders including staff, clients, and external organizations
  • Experience in leading, mentoring, supervising, and training junior staff
  • Demonstrated experience in providing strategic legal advice and policy recommendations within tight deadlines
  • A current Australian practicing certificate which entitles you to practise in Victoria as a government legal practitioner (mandatory)
